Experiment 3.1

A Miniature Water Cycle

Materials:

an adult

small, shallow metal pan about 20 cm (8 in) on a side

stove

water

wood blocks

large metal pan about 25–30 cm (10–12 in) on a side

ice cubes

You can make a miniature water cycle to show how water moves from the earth to the atmosphere and back again. To do so, place a small metal pan on a stove. Pour water into the pan until it is about half full. Use blocks of wood to support a larger pan above the smaller one, as shown in Figure 16. Add cold water and a few ice cubes to the upper pan. Ask an adult to turn on the stove and heat the water in the lower pan.

After a few minutes, you will see tiny water droplets in the air above the lower pan. Eventually, you will see water condensing on the bottom of the upper pan. This water will form larger drops and fall back into the lower pan, which represents the earth’s surface, be it land or water.

What does the upper pan represent in this miniature water cycle? In the real water cycle, what supplies the heat that causes the water to evaporate?
